Frequently Asked Grooming Questions

Below you'll find a list of some of the most frequently asked grooming questions we get at Little Friends Pet Grooming. If you have a question that is not on this list, please feel free to give us a call at 609-298-5954, and we will be happy to help answer it for you!

How soon do I need to bring my puppy in to be groomed?

We recommend you schedule your puppy's first grooming at around 3 months of age, which is when most will typically already have all their first vaccinations. The first visit is extremely important, as it sets the tone for all your puppy’s subsequent trips to the groomer. Therefore, your puppy should be introduced to grooming in a safe and loving environment, so they learn not to be fearful when it’s time to come back in. Little Friends Pet Grooming specializes in first grooming services for puppies, so you can have peace of mind knowing your best friend will always enjoy future visits.

How often should I bring my dog in for Grooming?

The answer to this question depends largely on your dog’s breed. Some breeds with longer hair like Standard Poodles or Collies require more grooming, while shorter hair breeds like Chihuahuas and Pugs require less.

We recommend the following schedule for most dogs:

  • Short Coats: Every six to eight weeks
  • Long Coats: Every four to six weeks
  • Short Coats: Every six to eight weeks
  • Long Coats: Every four to six weeks
  • Short Coats: Every six to eight weeks
  • Long Coats: Every four to six weeks
Of course, this schedule varies, because not all dogs are the same. Coat and skin problems such as mats or parasites can affect how many visits they’ll need. In addition, if your dog’s haircut is more intricate or requires more frequent maintenance, you may want to bring them in once, twice or three times a month.

Do you use crate dryers or cage dryers?

We love dogs, and their safety is paramount at Little Friends Pet Grooming. Many grooming facilities use crate or cage dryers to facilitate the drying process, or fit more dogs into their schedule. We prefer to give your dog individual attention and care from start to finish, and that means we towel dry each one and do not use crate or cage dryers.

Do you take dogs out to relieve themselves or walk during a grooming appointment?

Our staff grooms dogs inside our facility and will not take your dog outdoors. We kindly request that you ensure your dog has been walked and allowed to relieve itself prior to coming in for a grooming appointment.

What does it mean when my dog drags its bottom on the ground?

If you see your dog dragging its bottom along the ground, that usually means some sort of irritation down there is bothering it. The most common reason for this is your dog's anal glands may be filled with fluid that has not been expressed during regular trips outside to relieve itself. The anal glands, when full, cause pressure that results in your dog “scooting” its bottom on the ground. Little Friends Pet Grooming offers anal gland expression in its Premium Pooch Spa Package, one of three spa packages we offer for your dog.

I give my dog regular baths, but I can’t seem to get rid of mats and tangles. Why?

The longer and thinner your dog’s hair, the more likely it is to develop tangles and mats. In order to maintain its coat and prevent tangles and mats, you should make brushing your dog a regular habit. In particular, brush your dog just prior to giving it a bath. Not doing this causes any existing tangles or mats to actually become worse and more difficult to remove. Eventually, the mats or tangles have to be shaved or cut out entirely, which can be stressful for your dog. If your dog has severe mats or tangles, please call and talk to us about the best strategy to take - we are happy to help!
